BEGINNING

GreenLife Coconut Products Philippines Inc. (GreenLife) is a Quezon Provincebased family-owned business engaged in processing of high value coconut products focusing on virgin coconut oil (VCO), coconut cider vinegar and other specialty coconut products. The company started on 2001 by Mr. Francisco and Emelita Rubio after having actually involved in coconut production and engaged in different seminars, trainings, and workshops related to the production of different coconut-based products.

The Coco Entrepreneur

Prior to the founding of GreenLife, Mr. Francisco Rubio raised by coconut farming livelihood in the remote island of Jomalig, Quezon Province. The only one in the six children who finished college education thru Coconut Levy Fund Scholarship. He graduated from the course Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in Manuel Enverga Unversity on 1985 eventually he became Municipal Agriculturist and also a coconut vendor in Lucena Public Market. He was the originator of the readymade Kakang Gata that was made available in every wet market today. With the mindset of giving back to coconut farmers, Mr. Rubio created a model of Integrated Village Coconut Processing that can help uplift lives of coconut farmers.

Establishment of Greenlife

In 2009, Mr. Rubio and his wife formally established Greenlife, a sole proprietorship producing VCO using the ANH process. The company’s establishment and registration was born out of necessity as increasingly, the VCO supply transactions entered into by Mr. Rubio required him to present business, Food and Drug Administration, and other regulatory permits. In 2014, GreenLife was incorporated under the name of “GreenLife Coconut Products Philippines Inc.” and recently, March 2015, it was Certified Organic by Control Union Inspections Pvt Ltd.

Introduction

Income in the coconut areas is very low. There are limited employments opportunities since big coconut processing plants are located at town proper and not at the communities where coconuts are sourced. Farmers and workers have no other option but to do copra processing and nuts selling to traders. Farmers do not have direct access to big processing plants. It is the traders that capture the bigger part of income since they are the ones that serve as linkage between farmers and big processors.

The village VCO tie-up system could be an answer to the cited problems. Since the availability of village VCO processing facilities is located in the coconut communities, employment will be available. Farmers can also sell directly to the village VCO processors that can translate to higher income. Moreover, VCO processors give a premium price for quality nuts.
